This week, in fundamentals classes, we’ll be learning to flow between top positions. Folks for whom this is already comfortable should focus on doing so while remaining heavy. In intermediate class, we’ll start usefully connecting arm drags to takedowns. Comp class will continue to be positional drilling, in the lead up to the 5/15 sub-only […]
This week, in fundamentals, we’ll be looking at how to achieve top position when grappling from the neutral ground position of kneeling. This is a great way to first learn and use the concepts of standing takedowns, but will also provide tools you can use in scrambles, guard, turtle, and half-guard. In intermediate class, we’ll […]
This week, in fundamentals, we’ll look at some basic leg lock knowledge, focusing on what is often players’ first leg entanglement: ashi garami. In intermediate class, we’ll be back to arm dragging from everywhere. See you in class!
Happy bday to Jeff Gelt! Keep in mind, if your bike needs to be tuned up this season, he’s the owner of Central Wheel in Farmington. I’m picking up mine soon. It’s good to know a guy!
This week, in fundamentals, we’ll discuss escaping from the bottom of half guard using what should be your “Plan A”: wedging yourself out the back door using the underhook. Then, we’ll talk about some options once you do. In intermediate, we continue omoplata-adjacent submission options. See you there!
This week in fundamentals, we’ll look at options to submit our opponents from the top of side control, specifically by attacking their arm. In intermediate class, we’ll look at how to defeat the last omoplata defense on our list, and then practice some submission alternatives that are nearby when attacking omoplata. See you there!
Come on out! Grab a drink, stay for 20 mins, whatever. Let’s hang. Word is, it’s trivia night, if you know things. Or dumbly enjoy like I will ?
BIG week for milestones, you guys. Congrats to Tom Ragin for hitting 300 classes, Nicky V for hitting 600 (!), and Dr. Matt Lewin for hitting his first 100!
This week in fundamentals, we’re freeing our leg and taking top position from our opponent’s half-guard, and in intermediate we’ll review overcoming omoplata defense, and look at other cool nearby submissions when omoplata isn’t working out.
Well earned, gentlemen! Josh is up to 4 stripes on his blue, now!
Hey, remember the last couple weeks when you couldn’t pass the guard during drilling? Let’s remedy that in fundies. In intermediate class we’ll move from omoplata entries to omoplata defenses and how to overcome them.

PMA will close on Wednesday, 3/2, so we can all attend this seminar. Please get tickets now (click above image, to be taken to Eventbrite)! New blue and purple belts, get them signed by Pedro Sauer. New students, please allow me to introduce you to your jitsu lineage! He’s a great instructor and person, who […]
Tonight, you better come train or provide proof of significant other (or bring them…) Detox from the sweetness of the holiday at class the rest of this week. I’ll be there every night for you guys, showing some jiu jitsu!
Happy birthday to Elijah Ragin, and congrats to Tom for surviving another year without getting surpassed (yet)!
This week in fundamentals, we’ll be practicing some of the highest-percentage submissions we have in our arsenal from the bottom of guard. In intermediate class, we’ll continue becoming omoplata experts, seeking entry from other unexpected places, besides guard. Come, check out MMA concepts Thursday, and Judo Saturday to expand your perspective on what we do […]
Happy birthday to Lamar Bowsky! Now age a little faster, so we can keep up!

New schedule, new opportunity to train! Starts Wed at 6a.
Congrats to Dalton for hitting his first big milestone at PMA!
This week, in fundamentals, we’ll look at how to retain the guard position. The guard is our defensive position against getting crushed by an opponent otherwise free to do so, on top. If we’re on the bottom, it’s vital we know how to trap our opponent in the maze of our guard long enough to […]
Can’t wait to see you folks who have been out sick, getting better. Time to get back to it, and this is a great week for it. We’ll be getting out of the deepest trouble, escaping the bottom of mount in fundamentals class, and continuing our look at omoplatas in intermediate classes. This week also […]
Starting this Thursday at 6pm, learn some striking & MMA concepts with Mike Dogs, who has competed in MMA, and GSP who will be contributing wrestling thoughts. Beginners are welcome to come see what it’s about! (It’s not “vs mode” sparring on day 1, so you know.) Who doesn’t like hitting stuff for fun and stress relief?
This week, let’s fall in love with MOUNT, again. Want it, get it, keep it, and finish from there. A good mount is good jiu jitsu, in all contexts.
Hey all. I am confirmed to be an instructor at this year’s Maine camp, but also, it has sold out. LOTS of people pull out of these, so if at all interested, go NOW and get on the waiting list. It affords you the chance to still decide later if you want to attend. If […]
NEW SCHEDULE STARTS JANUARY 31 In reorganizing our schedule, I’ve carefully considered: • How a student of any given level can enjoy a whole block of time at PMA on any given night • The incorporation of our own students, Steve Ross, Greg St Pierre, and Dan Mainiero stepping into BJJ coaching roles. • A “Peer Share” class, where Greg or Dan could share […]
Please come support Josh Finkelstein and Brian Lane with your presence on the night of their purple belt test!
This week in fundamentals class, I’ll give you some strategies for when you are in a kneeling face-off (eg. start of rolling). The concepts in them are really usable everywhere, and of course, translate well to standing takedowns. If you have doubts about your ability to do standing takedowns, this is a great place to get […]
MORNING CREW: Please comment if you plan to attend 9:30a class Tue/Wed/both this week
A date is set for this coach track program: Sunday, Jan 30. This is not only for folks who already assume coaching roles (Robert Astur, Taylor Lawrence, Greg St Pierre, Tom Ragin, Dan Mainiero, Steve Ross, Mike Ouellette), though I hope my selected date works for 100% of you guys! It is for anyone interested in one day coaching others. […]
Amped to get back to it this week. Come in, and let’s get you better at jiu jitsu
1998 at the original Gracie Academy in Torrance, CA, with Ed O’Neill
This week, we took a good look at our most basic escapes from back control. Escapes from the “under” side (AKA “weak side”), the “over” side (AKA “strong side”), and escapes of opportunity, when an opponent’s back control is missing a necessary component to prevent our movement. These are a missing cross-side hook, a missing […]

Back on the mats this week. Looking forward to going mad looking at all those blue belts – they’re freakin everywhere! Last week got a little smushed, so we pick up where we left off, escaping the back in fundamentals, and reviewing any questions related to 2021 topics (leglocks, omoplatas, HQ guard passing, armbars, and […]
